The Scottish Football Reminiscence Project

The Scottish Football Reminiscence Project was officially launched on 12th June by legendary Hibernian and Scotland centre forward Lawrie Reilly. The project aims to provide reminiscence therapy to people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Sadly there are 63,500 people with dementia across the country and 7,000 people are diagnosed with the illness every year. Now the sport of football is being used as a tool to help stimulate the minds and memories of those who suffer from this degenerative illness.

Reminscence packs containing images of old match programmes, famous players, team line ups and action shots will be available to selected care centres via the project website. These images can be printed off and put into the packs. Four regions have been established with Aberdeen FC maintaining packs for care centres in the north east, Falkirk FC covering Central Scotland, the Hibernian Historical Trust overseeing Edinburgh and the Scottish Football Museum responsible for the West of Scotland. The project was funded by Museums Galleries Scotland and also has Alzheimer Scotland, Culture & Sport Glasgow, the Scottish Library & Information Council and Glasgow Caledonian University as partners.
